On 28 November 2009, it was reported, by a US Embassy spokesman, that 3 Americans had died in a plane crash in Shanghai. (Plane Crash in China Kills 3 Americans )

The four injured in the crash are from the United States, Indonesia, Belgium and Zimbabwe.

The crashed MD-ll plane belongs to Avient Aviation, a freight charter airline based in Zimbabwe. It was scheduled to fly from Shanghai to the Bishkek Manas International Airport in Kyrgyzstan. (reports on this incident)

Avient is a UK based air cargo company run by Andrew Smith, a former British army officer.

Reportedly, in the Congo, Avient flew bombing raids that killed and maimed civilians. (Briton linked to Congo war crimes - Times Online )

In 2002, Amnesty International suggested that Avient were complicit in sanctions busting operations that supplied arms to the Zimbabwean Defense Force.

In 2008, the Indonesian government threatened to shut down a U.S. Navy medical research lab in Jakarta (NAMRU-2) because it could be a cover for spying. (operations incompatible with "Indonesia's security interests.”)

The research lab takes an interest in flu viruses. (NAMRU-2)

The first Navy Medical Research Unit Two was established in cooperation with the Rockefeller Institute. (NAMRU-2)
