DID SOMETHING GO WRONG IN THE 1960s?

Glasgow c1900 (Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Museums - Website for this image)

One parent families are not new.

In the UK, in the late 1730s, 24% of marriages were ended by the death of a partner within ten years and 56% within 25 years.

In Liverpool in the UK, in the late 1830s, the life expectancy of child workers was only 15 years. (Life Expectancy)

In the UK, in the period before 1837, it is estimated that over 50% of all births were conceived outside marriage.

In 1939, in the UK, the Registrar General found that 30% of all first children born in the UK in the previous year had been conceived out of wedlock. ('Happy families?' history and policy, by Pat Thane)

High levels of cohabitation and illegitimacy may not be new.

But, did something go wrong in the 1960s?

At http://historytoday.com/paul-lay/letters-december-2010, A Mackie wrote about the 'permissiveness' that allegedly came to certain countries in the 1960s:

"Can we say that the triumph of libertarianism was beneficial?

"We have an infantilised population; celebrities who are overpaid and childishly arrogant; a generation of illiterate children out of control; adolescents whose anti-social behaviour is now beyond the point of legislation; the influence of entertainers and satirists exceeding that of the lawmakers; and the denigration of public life.

"I certainly agree with tolerance, but beware of Pandora’s box."

In 1956, the high master of St Paul's School in London described "the gradual dissolution of home life" that he observed around him.

At historyandpolicy.org, Professor Pat Thane, Research Professor in Contemporary History at King's College London, wrote the following ('Happy families?' history and policy, by Pat Thane):

"There is a widespread belief, especially in some political and media circles, that since the 1960s there has been a breakdown of family life in Britain on a scale without historical precedent.

"Such a claim may result, among other things, in policy responses based on false assumptions about the history of the family."

According to Professor Thane:

The 'permissive'1960s were not the decisive break with long-established norms of marital stability and sexual propriety that is often thought.

There was a change in the late 1960s from some of the norms of the post-Second World War period, but that was the historically unusual period, with high rates of relatively long-lasting marriages.

High rates of lone motherhood and of complex step-families were common for centuries due to high death rates especially among younger men.

High rates of marriage break-up, often due to domestic violence towards women and children, were also common in the past.

Remember 1972?

High rates of unmarried cohabitation of men and women bringing up children prevailed over many centuries, mainly due to the difficulty of obtaining a divorce before 1969.

Premarital sex was a normal part of the courtship process for very large sections of the population long before the 1960, and partly accounts for the persistence of illegitimacy over the centuries.

Younger people are not more neglectful of older relatives than in the past: older people are now more likely to have surviving children and to be in regular touch with them, with mutual support between the generations widespread.

The poorest families have always found it hardest to achieve stability and harmony, suggesting that socio-economic inequality may be a more important challenge than features of the family itself.

(Full deatils here: 'Happy families?' history and policy, by Pat Thane)

Are people more rebellious since the 1960s?

Since the 1960s, there may be more children going in for anti-social behaviour.

But, how many children speak out about 9 11?

How many children are not brainwashed by TV?

Back in 1919, people seemed much more rebellious.

Tanks in Glasgow, in 1919, ready to shoot the people.

How vicious are the ruling elite?

"In 1919 Glasgow's engineering unions called for a general strike starting on 27 January in support of the demand for a 40-hour working week...

"The Government sent English troops to Glasgow...

"Six tanks and 100 motor lorries accompanied the troops, and they were sent to strategic points across the city on 1 February in a calculated show of force." - I Belong To Glasgow: Bloody Friday

The British military were prepared to shoot the people.

"Soldiers armed with machine guns, tanks and a howitzer arrived on the Friday night and Saturday to occupy Glasgow's streets.

"A 4.5 inch Howitzer was positioned at the City Chambers, the cattle market was transformed into a tank depot, Lewis Guns were posted on the top of the North British Hotel and the General Post Office, armed troops stood sentry outside power stations, docks and patrolled the streets." - Battle of George Square - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

People got hurt.

"The seriousness of the government's intent can be gauged from Regulation 965 about how to deal with 'civil unrest': 'It is undesirable that firing should take place over the heads of the rioters or that blank ammunition should be used.'" - BBC NEWS.

KIDS AND NARCOTICS AND VIOLENCE

Glasgow Boys by Patrick Mackie

On 6 September 2010, we read that in one class in a UK school:

21 out of 24 kids were found to have families with big social problems, including drugs dependency, alcoholism and serious violence.

Revealed: Stark reality of frontline teaching.

According to The Herald: A new report by Glasgow City Council refers to a 'horrendous catalogue of social issues ... in schools serving large swathes of the city plagued by poverty.'

Glasgow means: the UK Labour Party (the party of Tony Blair), drugs barons, and poverty.

The churchgoing teenager who went to a private school. (dailymail.co.uk/z) - see below

According to the Glasgow report: some of kids were coping with the recent deaths of close relatives through drug abuse; four had parents with drug or alcohol addictions; some had been exposed to domestic violence; one child's mother had recently attempted suicide; one kid had moved out of the family home after being assaulted by her mother; another was suffering nightmares after being attacked by his brother.

Most of class had difficulties with reading and writing.

glasgowfamilyalbum.com/photo/4467294333/

Aangirfan was once introduced to a group of young teenagers in a certain large, chaotic Glasgow school.

All the children were white and 'Christian'.

We remember:

Robert, some of whose family had been in court on a murder charge.

Robert could not sit still; he rocked back and forward in his seat.

Robert could barely write his name.

We felt that Robert should have been getting intensive care in some sort of mental institution.

John, who was, a few months later, to get an 8 year jail sentence for killing another boy.

John had a certain innocent charm, but he spent his leisure time with gangs who carried knives and got drunk.

We felt that John, from an early age, should have been getting intensive care in some sort of small friendly school.

And, he should have been given a mentor who would have got him involved with playing football in the evenings.

Thomas A, who had been a house burglar since the age of 8.

He was due to return to court within weeks.

We felt that Thomas needed to be in a small school, and he needed a mentor.

Glasgow by :DavidMcKenzie

Danny, who was soon to get a long sentence for stabbing to death another kid.

Danny had a certain charisma, but he looked as if he was high on drugs and drink.

We felt that Danny should have been in some sort of small friendly boarding school, far away from drugs gangs.

Peter, a small thin boy, who had recently been thrown down some school stairs by the bullies.

Peter needed to be in a small friendly school.

Charles, a round shaped boy, who was also subjected to constant bullying.

Charles should have been in a small friendly school.

Andrew, a small thin boy, who was soon to be locked up after raping a small girl.

Andrew should have been in a small friendly boarding school.

Thomas B, who was one of the few well behaved kids. He could barely read.

Thomas later joined the army and, the last time he was seen, he was thoroughly drunk and noisy on a train travelling south.

Thomas should have been in a small friendly school.

Glasgow Harbour by Thomas Nugent

Sorting out the problems of Glasgow would involve the following:

Booting out the Labour party.

Closing down the Glasgow Education Department which runs the schools.

Providing deprived kids with intensive care in small classes in small independently run schools.

Breaking up the large schools and the large housing estates and large tower blocks.

Providing all deprived kids, and their families, with mentors.

Kicking out all the corrupt police, and getting masses of honest police onto foot patrols at night.

Legalising drugs.

And, most important, changing the culture of the country.

Certain countries, such as Denmark, Switzerland and Singapore, have fewer problems than Britain.

Glasgow need to copy those countries.

Jennifer Thompson, a churchgoing, private school girl.

The sleazy culture of the UK needs to change.

Jennifer Thompson was a churchgoing teenager who attended a private school.

"Now, at the age of 21, she advertises herself as 'Juicy Jeni', the £1,200-a-time hooker whose charms Wayne Rooney apparently found so irresistible" (dailymail.N)

Jennifer Thompson was born in Aberdeen.

She attended a Catholic secondary, Thornleigh Salesian College and then the Lord's Independent School.

According to 'friends', by 15, Jennifer was a 'wild child', constantly out on the town getting drunk. (Jennifer Thompson.)

Jennifer's father worked abroad and was rarely at home.

Jennifer became "a party animal and was regularly in hospital getting her stomach pumped after drinking too much."

Reportedly, she was introduced to drugs at the age of 16.

"By her final year at school, Jennifer was a fully fledged prostitute."

She was best friends with Amy Leigh Barnes.

Amy became a model and Hollyoaks actress before she was murdered at the age of 19.

Jennifer's parents Hamish and Danuta, who are on holiday in Portugal, are said to have disowned her. (What turned Jennifer Thompson into Wayne Rooney's £1200-a-night ...)

'NARCOTIC' during a lunch at council's HQ

In his memoir "Dreams of My Father" Obama explained that he had used cocaine.

The Bush name has been linked to cocaine.

Bill Clinton has admitted using drugs.

Reportedly, David Cameron, leader of the UK Conservative party, was involved in a drugs scandal. (Politicians and drugs: so who wins? Politics The Observer)

Image from Tris. http://munguinsrepublic.blogspot.com/

In the UK, a number of politicians have had their names linked to narcotics.

(POLITICIANS AND DRUGS; PURCELL AND THE ICEMAN)

On 15 April 2010, we read that the police have quizzed Councillor Ruth Black, a pal of Steven Purcell, over allegations of drug dealing and corruption.

(Friend of shamed ex-council leader Steven Purcell quizzed over .../ Police quiz Purcell ally over drugs allegations )

Ruth Black has visited a police station to discuss allegations that, thanks to her friendship with Purcell, she was unfairly given a £50,000 council contract.

Scottish National Party councillors have accused Purcell of cronyism over his decision to award a contract to run a gay centre to Black.

Ruth Black

Black had previously run a gay centre which went bust with big debts.

Black was asked if she had a role in the supply of drugs to Purcell's pals.

According to The Sun, a drug dealer, Barry Forde, has told how Ruth Black passed him 'speed' during a lunch at Glasgow council's HQ.

THE UK LABOUR PARTY'S STEVEN PURCELL AND COCAINE GANGSTERS

The UK Labour Party's Steven Purcell might have become Scotland's First Minister.

In 2009, Purcell was interviewed by officers from an elite crime squad, in a private meeting in his office at the Glasgow City Chambers. (Police warned Steven Purcell about gangster link - Scotland on Sunday )

Purcell, the former leader of Glasgow City Council, was warned about being linked to Glasgow gansters who were being investigated by police.

Police chiefs told Steven Purcell that he was the target of an underworld cocaine blackmail plot.

Purcell confessed to friends that he had taken cocaine. (Steven Purcell confessed to having cocaine problem after meeting with police)

Purcell, who has now fled Scotland, was warned by the police that they had information about his social links with members of a powerful cocaine baron's network.

Purcell had been identified during surveillance of a Glasgow gangster.

Purcell was said to be too close to a certain drug dealer. (Steven Purcell pals voiced blackmail fears )

According to the Daily Record, John Friel is one of many people linked to crime in Glasgow. (More of Scotland's millionaire crime lords - The Daily Record)

Friel, 58, now has a property empire including shops, restaurants and bars.

Friel was jailed in 1985 after travelling to London to buy cocaine.

McGraw

Glasgow 'crime boss', Tam McGraw owned security companies, taxi firms, pubs, and a property portfolio in Scotland, Ireland and Spain worth 'at least £10m'.

McGraw's empire was said to be worth £30 million in total. (In Scotland it has been estimated that 47% of individuals are earning under £10,000 per year.)

Allegedly, McGraw's main income came from the sale of heroin and cocaine.

It has been claimed that McGraw was backed by corrupt police officers, who passed on confiscated drugs which McGraw then sold on the streets. - (Gangster reign of The Licensee brought to end by heart attack / GANGSTER NO1 IS DEAD')

After one failed robbery, McGraw was arrested while trying to flee on foot.

Charges were dropped and he was released the following morning. (According to the Mail on Sunday, 29 January 2006, only 3% of crimes in Scotland result in convictions.)

One of the McGraw family businesses, the Caravel pub, was suddenly bulldozed after the police learnt that it had played a role in the deaths of Joe "Bananas" Hanlon and Bobby Glover.

The demolition prevented a planned forensic investigation. - An inglorious end to the shadowy life of a feared gangland criminal

Reg McKay, in The Daily Record, 29 August 2005, reported that a street brawl between police left people scrutinising the cosy relationship between the Licensee (McGraw) and 'his police officer pals.'

"One of the Serious Crime Squad grabbed McGraw and tried to take him away from his Scottish Crime Squad captors.

The tug of war was on.

Then one man threw a punch and bedlam broke out with police wrestling, kicking and butting each other as McGraw stood in the middle of the battle totally ignored.

"Locals gathered for the best entertainment they'd had in years. Duelling rozzers. One or two joined in, taking the chance of a free swipe at a copper.

"Eventually peace was restored and the two police outfits went into confab.

Whatever was said, the handcuffs were unlocked and Thomas McGraw walked back to his flat, a free man once again."

The Daily Record wrote: "Local uniforms and CID could often be found sitting in the McGraws' home drinking tea and smoking.

"When McGraw bought The Caravel pub, certain well-known detectives were in regularly, drinking heavily and never putting their hand in their pockets. It was too cosy."

McGraw was a friend of loyalist (Northern Irish protestant) terror chief Johhny 'Mad Dog' Adair. 'Both men were deeply involved in the drug trade between Scotland and Ulster (Northern ireland)' ( McGRAW: PETTY THIEF TO A £30M FORTUNE HOW DRUG-DEALING )

According to the Daily record: "Deals between crime boss Tam McGraw and the IRA saw a unit of republican heavies travel to Glasgow at The Licensee's expense to protect him... (summer of 2002) when hitmen were said to be lining up an assassination attempt." Daily Record - Scottish News - PART TWO OF A DAILY RECORD SPECIAL ...

A rival to McGraw was Arther Thompson. Former 'Glasgow godfather' Thompson reportedly was selling guns to the UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force).

"He got caught, and decided to turn grass for MI5.

They then told him he could pretty much start the drugs trade in Glasgow." - Donal MacIntyre - erutufonnofuture

Rod “Popeye” McLean was 'a ruthless killer and international drug baron'. Reportedly, McLean worked for the British security services - MI5 and MI6. - Ecosse: My killer uncle

Who was McGraw really working for?

This was just hours after his teenage friend, Danus McKinlay, was found dying outside the City Chambers building.

Danus was close to Purcell.

"Danus worshipped the ground Steven walked on. They were best mates. Danus would do anything for Steven."

Steven Purcell had been trying to sort out the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), a government organisation, some of whose officials had run up a £117,573 expenses bill in three years, including £49,195 spent on overseas trips. (All aboard the SPT gravy train - Times Online)

Jack McConnell was Scotland's First Minister and part of Blair's Labour Party.

Jack McConnell's wife, Bridget, is head of the Culture and Leisure Department of Scotland’s biggest local authority.

Reportedly, Jack McConnell's wife's department, and Jack McConnell's party organisation in Glasgow, gave Eddie Lyons, an alleged 'gangster', £1.4m in public funds over 10 years to run a community centre used by children.

Local people asked that Eddie Lyons be sacked as co-ordinator of Chirnsyde Community Initiative in Milton, north Glasgow.

Reportedly the Lyons’s family was involved in a 'war' with another group of alleged 'gangsters'.

At least 11 people have been shot since 2003 as a result of this 'war'.

In December 2006, the community centre was closed when Lyons’s nephew Michael was shot dead and his son Stephen and another man were critically injured.

In 2001 Eddie Lyons, his sons Stephen and Eddie junior, his brother Johnny and a friend called Paul McGuiness were charged with the attempted murder of Thomas McDonnell, who was attacked outside the community centre.

£63,000 was confiscated from Eddie Lyons’s home by police investigating alleged drug dealing.

In 2003, local parents were complaining that the council was forcing them to send their children to after-school fitness classes at Chirnsyde.

11-year-old Moira Anderson was last seen boarding a bus in Coatbridge, near Glasgow, Scotland, in 1957.

She was on her way to the shops to buy a box of chocolates for her mum’s birthday.

According to The Sunday Times (Pressure on police to release paedophile dossier), 23 April 2006, Strathclyde Police have a dossier listing members of a child-abuse ring.

This dossier may identify the people who kidnapped Moira.

The dossier is said to implicate senior public figures, including senior police officers and members of the Crown Office and former Scottish Office.

These public figures are said to have abused children in Strathclyde (the Glasgow area) during the 1950s and 1960s.

The dossier is said to list vehicles and safe houses used in Glasgow, Monklands and Paisley where children were hidden before being taken to sex parties.

Strathclyde police have decided not to release the dossier.

The dossier was written by James Gallogley, a convicted child-abuser who died in Peterhead prison in 1999.
