Certain car firms have lost money because they have ignored their more sensible customers.
Certain newspapers have lost money by promoting trash and lies, thus ignoring their more sensible customers.
Certain internet firms seem to be going the same way.
Youtube now promotes the commercial trash and makes the good stuff difficult to find.
A lot of people have given up on Youtube.
But, what has been happening at YouTube could happen throughout the internet.
What about the Google-Verizon deal?
Annalee Newitz has explained How the Google/Verizon proposal could kill the internet in 5 years
According to the Google-Verizon agreement, the internet will have two tiers.
You will have to pay extra for the top tier.
The top tier will load fast and will be controlled by the big corporations.
The bottom tier will be the "public internet".
It will load more slowly.
Columbia law professor Tim Wu points writes in the New York Times:
Just consider the power and public role of firms like Verizon or Google (especially if they work together).
Sitting atop the web, they can influence what firms succeed or fail — by making sites load faster or slower, or end up on page 10 of search results.
It goes further — in subtle ways, the information carriers have the power to influence elections and even censor speech they don't like.
Google's YouTube is the model for what is going to happen.
The internet will see more porn, sport, celebrities and Hollywood, and less in the way of blogs.
